I . Search for Light Echoes
نویسنده
چکیده
We have used FORS1 at the ESO VLT to search for light echoes in imaging polarimetry from four historical supernovæ in the face-on nearby spiral galaxy M83 (NGC 5236). No echoes were detected around our targets (SN 1923A, SN 1945B, SN 1950B and SN 1957D). This implies that the interstellar medium in their environs is rather tenuous (a few particles per cm), possibly as a result of previous supernova explosions that could have cleared the immediate vicinities Based on Observations collected at the European Southern Observatory, Chile (ESO Programme 66.A0397). On assignment from the Space Telescope Division, Research and Scientific Support Department of ESA.

A Search for Candidate Light Echoes: Photometry of Supernova Environments
Supernova (SN) light echoes could be a powerful tool for determining distances to galaxies geometrically, Sparks 1994. In this paper we present CCD photometry of the environments of 64 historical supernovae, the first results of a program designed to search for light echoes from these SNe. We commonly find patches of optical emission at, or close to, the sites of the supernovae. The color distr...
متن کاملOn the Search for Quasar Light Echoes
The UV radiation from a quasar leaves a characteristic pattern in the distribution of ionized hydrogenthroughout the surrounding space. This pattern or light echo propagates through the intergalacticmedium at the speed of light, and can be observed by its imprint on the Lyα forest spectra of background sources. As the echo persists after the quasar has switched off, it offers the possib...
متن کاملObservability of Scattered-Light Echoes Around Variable Stars and Cataclysmic Events
Scattered light echoes from variable and cataclysmic stars offer one of the most effective means to probe the structure and composition of circumtellar and interstellar media. I build a simple model of light-echo surface brightness by considering the source spectrum, and the dust density, geometry, and scattering efficiency. I use this model to investigate whether echoes should be observable ar...
متن کاملProbing the Type Ia Environment with Light Echoes
In general, Light Echoes (LE) are beautiful, rather academical and therefore unavoidably useless phenomena. In some cases, however, they can give interesting information about the environment surrounding the exploding star. After giving a brief introduction to the subject, I describe its application to the case of Type Ia Supernovae and discuss the implications for progenitors and their locatio...
متن کاملLight Echoes of Transients and Variables in the Local Universe
Astronomical light echoes, the time-dependent light scattered by dust in the vicinity of varying objects, have been recognized for over a century. Initially, their utility was thought to be confined to mapping out the three-dimensional distribution of interstellar dust. Recently, the discovery of spectroscopically useful light echoes around centuries-old supernovae in the Milky Way and the Larg...
